Dating with a disability – by Natasha Astill
This is my personal experience. Please note that it might be different for others. It has been hard for me to find someone who I would like to date. Last year I tried something completely out of my comfort zone.
I went speed dating. I didn’t go alone I went with my sister. Unfortunately, I didn’t find anyone there, but it gave me good experience in having conversations. Prior to the speed dating, I sat down with my support worker to discuss different conversations topics etc.
Later in the year, I tried giving a dating app a shot and I had success! I was super nervous about my first date with this person. My mum gave me advice on what to message him. On the day of the first date, my mum sat at the cafe to make sure that I was okay. My mum sat at a different table near us. The date went well we met up for a second and third time. We now have been dating for 4 months.
If I were to give anyone advice regarding starting dating it would be to make sure that you be yourself and be honest.
