Were you #BornWithIt?

22 August 2019

From the 8thcentury BC to the 4thcentury AD, athletic competitions were held in Olympia, Greece. In 1894 the International Olympic Committee was founded, with the first Olympic Games taking place in Athens in 1896. Over 100 years later, they’re now recognised as the world’s foremost sports competition, participated in by over 200 nations and held every four years.

In 1948 they were joined by the Paralympic Games.

Starting with a small gathering of British World War II veterans, the Paralympics are now one of the largest international sporting events of our time, with thousands of competing athletes. And every athlete that takes their place on the award podium shows that they aren’t defined by their disability. They were born with something more; grit, determination, commitment…

Taking up wheelchair racing at 14 years old, Kurt Fearnley went on to represent Australia at five Paralympic Games, taking to the podium for three gold, seven silver, and three bronze medals. He picked up another six gold, two silver, and one bronze across the World Para Athletics Championships and the Commonwealth Games.

Rheed McCracken started wheelchair racing at 13, just two years before making his Paralympic debut at the London 2012 Games, where he took home silver and bronze medals for Australia. In 2016 he brought home two more medals; another silver, and another bronze. With the World Para Athletics Championships in 2013 and 2017, he secured another four silver and two bronze.

Competing first with her prosthetic legs and then entering the wheelchair racing arena in 2002, Eliza Ault-Connell went on to receive three silvers and two bronze medals across the World Para Athletics Championships and the Commonwealth games.

Competing on a world stage, and #BornWithIt, they prove that they have something extra, something special.
