Footpath Frustrations - my experience with accessibility barriers during roadworks – by Natasha Astill
Recently I have experienced some barriers when accessing the footpath while I am on my mobility scooter.
In my local area near where I live, there were roadworks as they were upgrading the stormwater drainage. The council did notify the community back in September 2024 that they were going to start this project soon.
Fast forward to December 2024 a few weeks until Christmas they decided to start the project.
When I was accessing the footpath while this project was happening, I got stuck on the curb multiple times as there were road cones/construction equipment in the way.
While I was stuck on the curb, some construction workers helped me and the mobility scooter up the pathway.
Another accessibility barrier that I faced was that the road cones were placed in the middle of the pathway, so I had to go around them by having to go on the grass which was private property.
I decided to contact the council about the accessibility issues that I faced due to the roadworks. The customer service representative was in correspondence with the senior advisor as they were unable to find the roadworks in their system. A few hours later the roadworks were packed up.
