Living on my own – by Alicia Kapa
As mentioned in my last blog, I moved out of home! I moved at the beginning of the year and I am 10 minutes from the city and work which is way better than an hour. It was not really hard to decide as I wanted a change and it was an opportunity for me to become my own person.
I live in a two-bedroom flat in Mount Eden and most of the time I enjoy it. I live by myself (flatmates sometimes cause more worries like how much water they are using for example). So I decided to venture out on my own. I still have full-time carers so I’m not on my own but obviously occasionally I get lonely but that’s what Netflix is for! Thinking about it, I’m actually quite busy and I enjoy getting to watch Netflix!
Anyway, living independently from my childhood home is cool but very different. I will always call the house I grew up in "home" and I will always have a special bond with it. I also know that it’s good to move away and discover the world even if it’s scary and makes you really poor!
The biggest thing I got from moving into my flat is resilience! I had my share of challenges the first few months but I stuck at it and grew. In fact, I’ve only had wifi for a week, I did a dance when I was connected like yay I succeeded (thanks to my dad and landlord).
I am really liking being in my own place despite the hard days. In fact, I have big plans for the near future which I’ll tell you about in my next blog!

I am a born and raised young New Zealand Māori woman. I was born with cerebral palsy which affects my muscles but not my mind. I am just like any other young person who has dreams, aspirations and enjoys having fun. I am in my fourth year at the University of Auckland studying Criminology and Māori Studies with dreams of one day working in the justice system. I have a YouTube channel called Wheely Wacky Adventures where my friend Leah and I share videos of our adventures such as skydiving and bungy jumping just to name a couple. I am full of life and ready to take on what comes for me.

You rock!!!
You were amazing in Y7&8 and even more amazing now! Super proud of the accomplished young lady you have become. Think you could come talk to my syndicate one day? In health, we are discussing things like resiliency and importance of positivity and thankfulness during challenging times.
